Carina Countdown Continues

Wow, Carina Press' launch is only one week away.  As you've probably noticed on my sidebar, my guest blogger list is a bit more full than usual for this month.  Instead of hosting one guest a week, I'm going to be hosting a different author each weekday (and a couple Sundays as well.)  Most of my guests have books launching with Carina Press this month, authors such as Carrie Lofty, KS Augustin, Alice Gaines, Dee Tenorio, Kris Starr and Bonnie Dee--there's such a long list!

And of course, the month wouldn't be complete without Inez Kelley popping in for her fourth guest spot. Let's see, so far she's talked about whether the tips matched the lips, big butts and underwear, and one post included the picture of a dancing/smiling condom followed by a cartoon of a leather-wearing dominatrix. What's next for her?

But since I like variety (and like to be an equal opportunity blogger) I've invited some old friends back to help me celebrate Texas Tangle's release. Authors like Red Garnier (who gave me a review that inspired my tagline of "passionate, provocative and decadent" -- I'll tell you more when she visits) and Delilah Marvelle are also stopping by. Then there's Cari Quinn and MJ Fredrick too.

Speaking of my sidebar, you may have noticed that I've put up a "Where's Leah today" listing. Those are the places I'll be blogging somewhere else. Some of the days, it'll be a true blog swap with my guest bloggers so while they're here on my blog, I'll be over on theirs. Sometimes they'll be here one day while I'll be at their blog another date. But don't worry, any day I am somewhere else, I'll leave a note on my blog along with a link.

Another Palindromic video

Yes, I know I've already posted something for today, but my sister just sent me the link to this and it reminded me of a video I posted a few weeks back on publishing. Since the blog is pretty much filled up until the middle of July, I decided to share it with you now.

It's almost a palindrome only instead of letters, the same words read in reverse take on a whole different meaning. What do you think of this one?

May? More like July

Things are heating up around here -- both with all the promo I've arranged for June, and weather-wise.  We're breaking all sorts of heat records around here.  It's still only May and we've already had several days up in the 30s, and today it's supposed to reach 30 with a humidex of 35.  (That's hot for around these parts even for July, and it's almost unheard of for May. For you non-metric types, 30 = 86F and 35C=95F, yeah, it's hot!)

Gizmo Guy is out golfing this morning with his buddies, and Curly is working at my other desk finishing up some book trailers I've hired him to make for me for Texas Tangle, and I'm sitting down working on the next in the Hauberk series contemplating the necessity of one of my favorite scenes *sob*. So while I try to decide whether to "kill my baby" as writers say, I'll leave you with this video--something Guitar Hero and Curly were discussing as we were watching the news this morning about the disastrous oil spill off the Louisiana coastline.

In case you hadn't caught on, it's a spoof from an Australian show called "A Current Affair" back in 1991, not a real interview, but lately some of the real interviews I've seen on the news reports come frighteningly close.

Forgotten Treasure

I was in a chat with Vivian Arend yesterday as we were plotting out my next FIVE books. Yes, you read that right. 5. Five. According to "Howtosayin.com" that's "pet" in Croatian, cinque in Italian, cinco in Spanish, Pięć in Polish, and vijf in Dutch. (Are those right?)  These five are in addition and unrelated to Chad's story--the next in the Hauberk series--as well as the two Hauberk stories I have planned to follow that.Yes, I know, I'm insane. But Viv figures she's busy, so I should be too. (Actually she said it with a bit more colorful language, but you get the idea.)

Anyway, during the chat, we were talking about epilogues and I said, I'd never had a an epilogue with any of my books. Then I remembered I had had an epilogue once. The original version of Private Property had an epilogue but my editor and I agreed it could be cut.  A while after Private Property was released,  I shared with my newsletter subscribers the 'deleted scene' but promptly forgot all about it.   So I checked. It's still up on the website ... but you had to know the code to go find it.

Want to see the original ending?  It's right here.  Bear in mind that it's unedited, since it was chopped from the book.

Bella Andre's Never Too Hot!

I'm so thrilled Leah invited me back to blog with her! In fact, it was reading Leah's “What do you want to know” blog post that helped me decide what to write today. :) Based on your responses to her question, how about a blurb for my newest release – NEVER TOO HOT (the third book in my Men of Fire series), an excerpt, and a little bit about me?

NEVER TOO HOT

A TOUCH IGNITES. A FIRE BURNS...AND THE HEAT HAS JUST BEGUN.

Deep in the cool green mountains of the Adirondacks, wounded firefighter Connor MacKenzie has come to rebuild the 100-year-old MacKenzie family cabin--and to be alone. A horrific blaze has left him scarred inside and out and certain of two things: He'll get back on his Hot Shot crew no matter what it takes, and any woman who ventures too close will not stay long.

Ginger Sinclair has been burned by a different kind of fire. Having just escaped from a bad marriage, she's retreated to the safety of the lakeside vacation town in upstate New York to start a new life. She's done with men, with relationships, with the danger of desires that can rage out of control--until she unexpectedly encounters Connor MacKenzie. As a hot summer on the lake grows ever hotter, they find themselves sharing a cabin and a romance that will swiftly engulf them both.

EXCERPT.....

Ginger was wiping down the counter with more force than necessary when the bells on the diner's front door chimed. She put down her rag and her hand was half-way into the menu box when she looked up.

And saw him.

Connor.

The immediate instinct to smooth down her hair and check her shirt for stains was so strong her hands were halfway to her head by the time she realized what she was doing.

What was she doing? Why was she worrying about impressing Connor?

That part of her life, the one where she made sure to be primped and polished in the fear of running into an acquaintance in an overpriced chi-chi grocery store was over and done with. She was simply going to show Connor to a seat, take his order and then deliver his food as she would any other customer.

And no matter what, she wasn't going to have any kind of hormonal reaction to his broad shoulders or chiseled jaw.

Cold as ice. That was her.

He sat down right in front of her, looking just as dangerous as he had on her porch.

“You're here. Ginger Sinclair.”

She'd never heard anyone say her name like that, almost like it was a curse, but with an almost sensual vibration beneath it.

Her heart jumped in response and she watched in horror as his eyes honed in on the pulse point at her neck. And then, as Elvis sang about how he couldn't help falling in love, she swore she could hear Connor's breathing speed up as he watched her body react to his close proximity.

She felt herself lean into him, saw him shift closer to her on the bar stool so that he could get closer even as her fingers were itching to reach out, to touch him and see if he would feel as hot as he looked.

The menu she'd been holding smacked into the underside of the counter and snapped her out of the crazy spell just in time. Connor looked a little stunned too.

What had just happened to her? To both of them? Had they both become unwilling participants in some sort of mad scientist's chemistry experiment to combine Man A with Woman B to see how quickly they'd combust?

Annoyed by her ridiculous lack of self-control, Ginger slapped a menu down on the gleaming Formica counter harder – and louder – than she planned.

“Tonight's special is meatloaf and mashed potatoes. I'll give you a few minutes to look at the menu and decide what you want.”

But instead of looking at the menu he said, “I know exactly what I want.”

She knew he had to be talking about food, and yet the way he said it felt like-

“I didn't know you worked here. I'm glad you do. Now I don't have to wait until morning to see you again.”

Oh. Oh my. A half dozen ceiling fans kept the diner cool. She shouldn't be feeling so warm.

“I've been wanting to tell you that I was a complete jerk this afternoon.”

She could feel herself softening, melting down from her core outward. But then she looked at him and realized her reaction was exactly what he'd been expecting.

This afternoon she could have sworn he wanted to throw her bodily off the porch. He had to have an ulterior motive. A second later it hit her.

“I take it you spoke with your grandparents?”

“I did. But my grandmother isn't the only one who thinks I misbehaved. Earlier today you asked if we could start over. Any chance that offer still stands?”

Her body screamed Yes! At the exact same time that her brain shouted Don't you dare, he's playing you!

Frankly, she had a hell of lot more faith in her brain to steer her right.

A gorgeous guy like him probably thought he could come in here smelling like fresh soap and pine needles and blink those shockingly blue eyes at her and get her to dumbly agree to whatever he wanted.

Like hell.

He might be saying all the right things, but she very much doubted his heart was into it. He wanted Poplar Cove. Period.

She narrowed her eyes, widened her stance behind the counter.

“Enough with the charm. Let's get down to it. What exactly do you want from me?”

About Bella

A LITTLE ABOUT ME: I've been writing romance since 2003 and sold my first book to Ellora's Cave in 2004. Since then I've written for Pocket, Bantam, and most recently Grand Central. To say that I love my job would be a huge understatement! I spend all day making up super sexy stories about incredible men and women – and thanks to all of the lovely people who read my books, I get paid for it. Amazing. :)

With NEVER TOO HOT, in particular, I ended up falling really hard for my hero, Connor MacKenzie. Sigh. There's just something about writing a physically and emotionally wounded hero that brought out all of my “you're so hot and wounded and I'm here for you” instincts. My heroine's, too!

I'd love to know – what are your favorite kinds of heroes? Funny? Sarcastic? Angry alpha (but in a hot kind of way, lol)? Frankly, I like them all. But right now, I'm on a bit of a tortured kick.

Leah here:  I love it when the author's title fits in to their name like that :D  You can find Bella over on Twitter or Facebook as well, or read more about her on her website.

Dana, where are you?

Calling Dana -- today's your last day to claim Chandra Ryan's Dragonborne.  Although I could have drawn a new winner already, I'm giving you one last chance to catch up. If I do not hear from you by 6 p.m. tonight, I'm drawing a new winner. So email me at leah @ leahbraemel DOT com.

With the release of Texas Tangle almost a month away, my time is getting severely limited.  My to-do list has spilled onto two pages.  I have a ton of blog posts to write, the logistics of a contest I have to figure out, a newspaper article I've been asked to write, a newsletter to prepare, book trailers and banners to make, etc. ad nauseum. Which means I may not be blogging as regularly as I'd like in the next week or so (then my guest bloggers take over--Whew!)

Oh, and don't forget about Carina Press's on-going contest -- there's still a chance to win all 38 launch books, or one of their daily giveaways. You can enter in a variety of ways via Twitter and Facebook and their blog.

Corralling Questions for Lorelei James

Happy Victoria Day to all my Canadian friends. Putting on my Mom hat for a moment: remember not to finish those 2-4s and then drive. There have been enough reports of deadly crashes already this weekend.

You may have noticed over on my list of guest bloggers that Lorelei James is scheduled to return to my blog on August 4th. Insert huge SQUEE here.

Since Lorelei is incredibly busy with synopses and outlines and edits along with writing, I wanted to make things easier for her. So I've offered to send her some questions about her upcoming Blacktop Cowboy series for her to answer when she gets a chance rather than trying to write up a blog post for me.

A little background -- the first in the Blacktop Cowboy series, Corralled, releases August 3rd from NAL (that's the publisher, not a bookstore) and is available to pre-order at Amazon or The Book Depository.

First in a new series about some hard-riding rodeo cowboys...and the women who can rein them in.

Sports therapist Lainie Capshaw has been rehabilitating injured cowboys long enough to know that a charming western drawl combined with a fine physical form doesn't mean you fall for the man.

So no one is more surprised than Lainie when she finds herself involved with not one, but two different men: Hank Lawson, a bullfighter, and Kyle Gilchrist, a bull rider. Lainie feels guilty about her two-timing, but it doesn't keep her from doubling her fun-that is until Hank catches her with Kyle.

She's shocked that Hank isn't mad. But she's more shocked to learn Hank and Kyle are hometown buddies. But when the men offer to share her-in every way-she knows that she's going to have to choose the one man who can give her the ride of her life.

I know a few of you who, like me, are total Lorelei James fans.  So here's where you come in. What do you want to know? Leave your questions in the comments.

Way back when...

....I was writing Texas Tangle, I set up a play list to keep me in a 'country' mood -- amongst other artists the list included Taylor Swift, Brad Paisley, Faith Hill and her delicious hubby, Tim McGraw.  One of my favorites that got me humming along every time was Tim's Back When.

(You may or may not be able to see the lyrics, the guy who did the video says it depends upon your screen, but they're damned near impossible to read on my high def 22 inch monitor. Guy needs to learn that red--or yellow--are not recommended for text on videos. Oops, sorry, went off on a rant again.)

To get back on track, yesterday I was reading a blog about what "kids these days" call condoms -- where my generation used to call them rubbers...although to me a rubber will always be an eraser. And a thong? They're what you wear on your feet at the beach. Well, maybe not this sparkly pair.

I've blogged before about how my critique partners have to check my writing to weed the Canadianisms out. (Remember my story of how I originally had Jodi from Private Property tugging on a toque and one of my critique partners thought she was putting some sort of French pastry on her head?)

Today is the first day of Canada's Victoria Day weekend, that many of us Canadians call the May 2-4 (as in two-four) weekend, and that's not just because it generally falls around the 24th of the month. Do you know what it means?  Got any terms from way back when that have a totally different meaning than when you used them? Or got any colloquialisms from your area you want to share? Or ones that an author has attributed to your area or era that aren't right?

The Glamor of a Writer's Life

Before I got my first contract with Samhain, I'd enviously watched my friends at the Toronto Romance Writers as they had books released.  They'd moan about the time the promotion took, so I sympathized and murmured all the proper supportive phrases. But I had no idea what went on behind the scenes.  Once you get published you're faced with a ton of things you never realized would suck quite so much time away from your writing.

"Do I take a cover ad spot with this site or that? Will it be worth it? Which site is best? Do I go on the number of hits they have per months? Or that they're specialized for my genre?" I still ask myself that question.

Of course, once you make the decision, then you realize..."Akk, I need a banner that's XXX x XX pixels -- how the @#$* do I use Photoshop? Help!" (Thank goodness my two sons both have extensive training in Photoshop thanks to their courses in high school Media Arts and Guitar Hero's college Computer Animation courses.)

"Dear Leah, here are your developmental edits for (insert title here). Can you get them back to me by this time next week please?" OMG, I thought I'd have two weeks and I've only got one. (Developmental edits are where the editor makes suggestions to change the story--fix plot holes, strengthen characters, strengthen the bones of the story, in other words.)  I'm going to have to cut a scene/add two scenes/change everything. Or not. To be honest, Private Property's edits were fairly light, but Texas Tangle took a lot more attention. Follow this up with copy edits (that's where the editor catches all the repetitive phrases and awkward sentences--the actual writing.) Which can still be time consuming. The line edits soon follow -- they're done by a different editor who is a grammar geek (I love them because, although they'd never believe it from my manuscripts, I'm a grammar geek too) This is where the commas get added/deleted, dangling participles, misplaced modifiers and more repetitions get fine combed out of the manuscript.

The edits are now out of the way but now I've got to concentrate on the blog hops I've arranged. Now you know that I invite guest authors here to my blog, but I go visit other blogs too. The idea behind hosting an author is to bring their readers to your site so you gain a new audience, and to be a guest, you hope that you'll gain the attention of a few of that author's regular readers and lure them over to the dark side your books. So it should be a win all around. BUT it takes time away from writing. As the guest, you have to come up with a post that introduces you to the people who have never heard of you before. If I talk about Gizmo Guy on my blog, if you're a regular reader you know who I'm talking about. If I mention Gizmo Guy on someone else's blog? Yeah, blank stares and confusion ensues. The blogs my guests send me also take time away from writing as it takes time to format them and download/upload the graphics and make sure all their links work. Not to mention all the back-and-forth emails as you're arranging the dates.

And finally there's real life. The non-writing side of my life. I have two sons who still live at home, and a husband who I like to pay attention to every now and then. After all, there's only so long I can spend at my desk before he starts feeling neglected. Then there's just all the other things life throws your way.

In the past month, life's been pulling me away from my desk a lot. A little under a month ago, my father died. It wasn't a shock, he'd been ill for a long time and had been living in a nursing home for the last two years. But it's not something you can pencil into a schedule, or tell your mom or your sister "can I get to that next week?" It has to be dealt with right then with all the ensuring drama death brings with it. All the papers that the government requires to be filed, phone calls, emails, and...of course the emotional aspect of it all.

To make the drama complete, last week Guitar Hero borrowed my car as he had an appointment with a local employment center. I got a text a little while later "I've had an accident..." It was a parking lot accident, low speed--the air bag of the lady who hit Guitar Hero didn't even go off, and everyone was fine, which is more important than anything. But it meant calls to the insurance company, calls to the adjuster, calls and trips to the bodyshop.

(Does that photo look like there's enough damage to write off the car? The headlight's not even busted. However, the bodyshop says it's going to cost $1600 to repair and so the insurance company has deemed our car so old it wasn't worth fixing up.)

Anyway, it looks like I'll be stuck to my desk more than I'd wanted. Now I have to schedule any trips out of the house around Gizmo Guy's schedule, and since he works in another town, that means shopping etc now has to be done in the evenings. I'll deal. Ideally it means I'll have more time to write. At least that's what I'm telling myself.

Joely Sue Burkhart: The Trials & Tribulations of Naming a Hero

It all started as a simple question I posed to my husband. I was working on a brand new idea that involved Maya mythology and I needed to name my hero. I told him I didn't want anything hard to pronounce or spell (like Itzpapalotl, the Aztec vampire from Laurell K. Hamilton's Obsidian Butterfly) or potentially cliched like “Jaguar Paw,” but a unique name that would immediately tell the reader that this hero was not your every day Tom, Dick, or Harry.

My husband said, “Why not Ruin?”

I scoffed, but that name—that stupid, stupid name!!—stuck in my head.

I tried to vanquish it by having a Casting Call, where I interviewed my character and put a face to him. From the beginning, the Maya hero was played by Dwayne Johnson in my mind. You can read the original interview and see that it didn't go so well.

Ruin wanted his name and so I finally surrendered.

Fast forward, and Carina Press wanted to publish Ruin's story, with one caveat: we were probably going to have to change his name. I invited Dwayne as Ruin back to my blog to make the sale announcement, trying to prep my brain to accept a new hero's name. My editor, Alissa Davis, made a valid point that it was strange to see such an “English” name on a supposedly “Mayan” hero, so I went back to the drawing board.

Ruin is loosely based on one of the hero twins of the Popol Vuh, a Maya creation story. Xbalanque was at least Maya in flavor and not cliched like Jaguar Paw, but not easy to spell or pronounce. We decided to call him “Balam” for short, which means jaguar, since some translations of Xbalanque's name were indeed “Yax Balam,” precious jaguar.

I made a complete revision pass to change his name, and even added a key pivotal moment near the end based on “Yax Balam” that I personally found very touching. We proceeded toward production, but when we got the cover copy, we hit another road block.

The general consensus was that Xbalanque wasn't really much better than Ruin.

We did more brainstorming, looking at Spanish words for various key phrases and even more standard Hispanic names, but I just couldn't see Ruin as “Carlos.”

He was still Ruin in my mind.

Luckily, Alissa agreed, and even though that meant another quick revision pass to change his name back, I was very happy. Ruin is unusual for a romance hero, yes, but definitely evocative. He is a “ruin” in many ways. He's tortured, cursed, and carries a crushing pyramid of guilt, yet there's a great deal of mystery and buried treasure to be found in his heart. He's as old as his ruined city, Chi'Ch'ul, the Mouth of Creation, on the shores of Lake Atitlan, Guatemala, and just as magical.

In the end, he's one very precious jaguar, Yax Balam, to Dr. Jaid Merritt.

Read Ruin's story in my upcoming Carina Press release, The Bloodgate Guardian, Chapter One excerpt. I hope you love him as much as I do!

Monday Morning Amusements

I am easily amused at times. Especially when life's weird little coincidences pop up.  Yesterday I was sitting at my desk wasting time writing Chad's story when I happened to look over on the shelf of one of my five highs.  Ever since my trip down to Texas in 2007 (which spawned the idea that eventually became Texas Tangle) I've collected cowboy hats. Gizmo Guy has even indulged this habit and added a few of his own to my collection. (Unless you live in Alberta or maybe some of the other prairies, cowboy hats aren't common around here.)  Ooops, got off track again...anyway, I happened to notice one hat amongst the others...How's this for a weird coincidence.  Okay, so it's a brown leather hat, and I think it's probably more an Australian hat than a western American hat but ... I thought it was cool that it had the same zig-zag pattern on the brim...

I even convinced Gizmo Guy to put it on and pose in the same way the model did. (He offered to take off his shirt, but, um, no...)

I'd say "small things amuse small minds" to describe how I spent so much time on this, but I think Gizmo Guy might be offended thinking I'm referring to him. I'm not. Honest! I really do mean I'm easily amused by strange things. And really, I'm still NOT referring to Gizmo Guy.

And just for the heck of it, not to totally insult GG, here's a shot of the guy from the Texas Tangle cover wearing his hat, from a different angle this time ...

Hellooo Brett. Honest, GG, I'm not trying to insult you!

As Luck has it ...

From the looks of the comments the other day, a lot of you want me to leave the contests open at least until the weekend to give you a chance to catch up on your blog reading. So I guess I'll leave it that my guest bloggers will blog on Wednesday and the contests will close and the winner will be announced the following Tuesday. That way you have exactly a week. And you can check on the winner from the previous week easily enough. I think I may put a little winner list on the sidebar too to make it easier for you keep track of.

And just because...here's a video Gizmo Guy sent me to cheer me up. (Although I wish it hadn't ended up with the clip it did. You'll understand when you see it.)

Distractions

Gah. I've always heard things happen in threes. And I've generally found it to be true, especially with unpleasant events.  Well, two unpleasant things have happened in the last three weeks, and I find myself now on tenterhooks wondering just what that third bad thing will be and when it'll show itself. So while I'm stressing out wasting my energy worrying about things that may never happen, here's a video that made me smile.  Why did it catch my attention? Because the cat in it looks just like Spike. Who couldn't mother anyone considering he's a male. (The color of his nose is reversed -- the black spot on this cat's nose is pink on Spike's--the pink is a black stripe, too. I'd never realized cats noses could be two different colors before I met Spike) Anyway, have a watch, as I said, it made me smile.

What do you want to know?

When unpublished writers first start thinking about actually getting published, we're told it's all about the writing. Getting that first line just right. The first paragraph. The first page. The first...well, you get the drift. We focus on word choice, and showing not telling, on not using passive voice or repetitive words.  And yes, it's ALL important. I still focus on those things.  What I wasn't told was that after you get that first contract, you then have to deal with the business of writing. Oh, all right, I was told about it by my published friends, I just didn't get that it could be just as soul sucking draining as writing.

Once you get that first contract, you find yourself thrust into the marketing world, something I've done my best to avoid in the first half century of my life.  Do I take a banner ad with this site or a static cover ad with that? Do book trailers actually result in any book sales? And how the heck do you make a banner or book trailer anyway? I'm a writer after all, not a graphic artist.

Which makes the subject of today's post rather confusing to me.  Blogging.  Why is it so hard?  I'm a writer after all. I should be able to come up with a short 500 word or less blog post every day, right? I should be able to talk about the story I've slaved over for months. I should find it easy to talk (ad nauseum) about the characters I've created, and usually fallen in love with.  So why am I having such a hard time coming up with blog posts about Texas Tangle?  I've not talked about it too much. You've not had a chance to get to know Nikki or Dillon or Brett. And yet ... I'm stumped.

I have over a dozen blog posts due to other authors who are hosting me on their sites, to introduce me to their readers. I owe it to the authors, and their readers, to give them something that they want to stay on the page to read. Because I know I auto-click off on the the hard sell type post, the one that has no personal information, no chatty note from an author only a "here's the blurb, here's the excerpt now buy the damned book"  type post. Yet those chatty little snippets are the frickin' hardest parts to write. So I find myself staring at a blank Word screen day after day thinking, "I don't know what to say? Why would people be interested in this?" Or worse, for an upcoming post I have to do for Carina where I have to come up with three interesting facts about me, "I'm boring. I make up stories in my head about people who don't exist. Who'd be interested? What do they want to know anyway?"  Yeah, yeah, I'm whining.

Anyway, here's your chance to sound off help me out.  When you read a blog post, what do you want to read about? What do you want to know about an author or the story?   Do you read character interviews? Do you watch book trailers? What makes you click off the page unread? What do you want to know about me that I haven't whined vented ranted written about in the over three years I've been blogging here.  What do you want to know about Texas Tangle?

Help me....

Chandra Ryan's Taking a Leap of Faith

My sister once asked me how I knew my husband was ‘the one’.  We’d been married for probably five or six years at that time and things were good, but I still found myself answering her, “I didn’t.  I still don’t know if I even believe in ‘the one’.  I will tell you the moment I knew we were going to be okay, though.”

It was a moment that took place about a week before our wedding.  I know, one would hope you know everything is going to be okay the moment you say yes, but it doesn’t always work out that way.  Anyway, a week before our wedding, my soon-to-be husband was in the middle of an argument when I heard him say, “Do you want to know how much she means to me?  She means everything.  I’d walk away from everything else if that’s what it took to marry her.”  Now that, my friends, is a leap of faith.  He believed so strongly in our relationship that he’d walk away from everything, everyone, if that’s what it took.  And so I knew.

To me, it’s those profound leaps of faith that really define a romance and make it memorable.  Whether it’s real or fictional, I want the hero and heroine to be so in love they’re willing to sacrifice everything else just to be together.  I want the relationship to be so strong that when the time comes, the couple has no doubts where they stand.  Don’t get me wrong, I don’t think you should turn you back on everything else just because you’re in a relationship.  But when push comes to shove, I want my heroes to be a man and have their lady’s back.  It’s something that’s so important to me, I found myself writing it into my newest release, Dragonborne.  It’s even the focus of the tag line to the story.

Now, twelve and a half years into the marriage, I still smile when I think back to that day.  And it wasn’t the last time my husband took my breath away with his faith in us.  Do I believe he’s ‘the one’?  I’m still not sold on the concept, but I can say—without any reservations—that he is the love of my life and I’d be lost without him.

In celebration of my recent release I’m giving away a pdf copy of Dragonborne.  All you have to do to enter is tell me what makes a romance memorable to you.  Is it the heroine, the hero, the back story and obstacles to overcome, maybe a test of love?  Just leave your answer in the comments section.

If you’d like to read the blurb or an excerpt for Dragonborne, they can be found on my website:  http://www.chandraryan.com/

Question for all you contest lovers

As you know, some of my guest bloggers hold contests where they give away copies of their books or other swag. As do I. But I'm wondering -- just how long should I be leaving the contest open for people to comment before I draw a winner? I've experimented a bit. Since most of my guests visit on Wednesday, I've done the route of "you have to comment by midnight tonight" and announced the winner the next day. But to be honest, I don't always get to my regular blogs every day and kick myself later for having missed a contest (yes, I like to win books too!)  So I've tried leaving comments open until the following Tuesday.  But what I've noticed is that usually the comments stop after Friday. So I'm thinking I'll split the difference and give you until Friday night (that'll give you three days to catch up on your blog reading) and post the winners on Saturdays.

What do you think?  For? Against?  Let me know by leaving a comment. Oh, and don't forget, by commenting, you are entered in my Reader's Appreciation contest each month.

Texas Tangle update

This just in ... the new and final cover copy for Texas Tangle. Cover copy, or blurb writing, is a real art form. It's the shortened version of the story that goes on the back cover of a book. Or is the description on Amazon that makes you want to click on that Buy link. A bad blurb might make you put the book back on the shelf. Or in this case, click off the page without buying the book.

In my humble opinion, the writers at Carina Press have done a bang-up job with this one:

Thanks to her cheating ex-husband and her thieving brother, all horse breeder Nikki Kimball has left is a bruised heart, an overdrawn bank account and an empty home. When sex-on-legs Dillon Barnett and his brooding foster-brother Brett Anderson start showing more than just neighborly attention, Nikki is intrigued…and a little gun-shy.

Dillon and Brett have a history; back in high school, the two friends fought a bitter battle over Nikki. Now, ten years later, Brett still longs to be the man in Nikki’s life, but he’s determined to stand back and let Dillon win Nikki’s heart.

Society says Nikki must choose between the two men she loves. Is Nikki strong enough to break all the rules in order to find happiness?

Happy Mother's Day

funny pictures-MOM LOVES YOU

Happy Mother's Day to all those moms out there.

What am I doing today? Well, Guitar Hero is still asleep and hasn't put in an appearance yet (yes, I know it's almost noon, but there you go.)

Curly's not even in the same country until tonight -- he's on a trip to New York city with his school band. Yes, he was in Times Square the day they had the second bomb scare (the one that turned out to be a cooler filled with water bottles) so there was a minor panic there. But he seems to be having a blast. One of the few messages I've got from him came from the Apple Store where he was trying out an iPad -- his message? That he'd seen the Naked Cowboy. Um, okay. They'll be attending a mass at St. Patrick's Cathedral this morning and then climbing on their bus and heading home straight from there. They should arrive home late tonight.

Gizmo Guy made me pancakes with raspberries on top for breakfast and I've already had a nap even though I've had three cups of coffee. (I seem to be having to nap a lot lately.) Grocery shopping is on the to-do list for later today, so basically it's a normal day.

So what have you been doing? Anything special?

Rebecca Goings is Riding the Lightning

When I write, I enjoy writing traditional stories of love and triumph.  I've written in all kinds of genres.  However sometimes, I enjoy writing things that are off the wall or a little out there.  I ask myself questions like, "Why aren't there any ghosts in westerns?"

From that little question, and idea sparked in my mind.  A modern-day woman would buy a ranch with a ghost on her land.  A cowboy.  And maybe he's trapped.  Ooo, I know, in a time loop!

Once that idea popped into my head, I didn't just have a ghost cowboy on my hands, I had the potential for a time travel.  And since I do so love my historical westerns, I decided to give it a go and see what happened.

RIDE THE LIGHTNING is a novella, my latest book from Cobblestone Press.  This story is one of the reasons I love being an eBook author--because we aren't chained to the traditional.  We can branch out, try something new.  While ghosts and time travel aren't anything "new" in romance, I hope I've done this story enough justice to warrant it being a little different from the norm.  At least for my own bookshelf.

I hope you enjoy the blurb and the following excerpt!

Can she save his life in the past to give him a future?

Rumors of a ghost cowboy didn’t stop Jillian Brady from buying a rundown ranch in Cold Creek, Texas.  When a mysterious horseman appears during a storm, she thinks it’s the locals playing a prank.

Mitchell Crenshaw is a ghost.  Murdered during a thunderstorm in eighteen seventy-seven, he’s been riding the lightning ever since.  Yet every time the storm moves on, he’s pulled back in time, forced to relive the day of his death.

Unless Jillian can intercede and save Mitch’s life, he’ll be doomed to ride the lightning forever…

~*~

“I suppose you want to know how it happened?”
She cleared her throat.  “I wasn’t going to ask.”
“Why not?”
With a shrug, she said, “Figured it’d be...impolite.”
He smiled.  “You can ask me anything, Jilly.  If you asked me for the moon, I’d try my hardest to reach up and pluck it out of the sky for ya.”
Her hands clamped down on the mug she was holding.  If she set it down, she’d be too tempted to take his hands, touch his chest, anything to get closer to him.  The man oozed a certain kind of easy charm that was downright sexy.  But remembering he was a ghost brought her to her senses.
“I was a witness to a murder.”
Jillian’s loud gasp reverberated throughout the room.  Her eyes widened, and she couldn’t help the look that must have crossed her face.  He nodded at her shock.
“Watched a man gun down a woman for nothing at all.  Mr. Fred Hennessy.  Told the sheriff what I’d seen.  But Hennessy had already high-tailed it out of the area.  Or so I thought.  It would seem I’d been in the wrong place at the wrong time.  He hadn’t expected there to be anyone to witness his crime.  Guess he figured if he got rid of the witness, he could get the murder charge dropped.
“There was a bounty on his head after I’d told my story to the sheriff, so Hennessy couldn’t show his face.  But he was pissed enough to seek me out at my own home.”
“Oh my God.”  Jillian covered her mouth.
Mitch sat forward and rested his elbows on his knees, clasping his hands together.  “It was storming that day, like it is now.  I’d saddled Gypsy and went exploring up Bunker’s Hill because I’d heard a gunshot.  Someone was shooting on my land.  Thought maybe rustlers had come for the cattle or maybe one of my ranch hands was having a dispute.  I needed to find out what was going on.
“So, I rode up the hill, heard another shot, and Gypsy went down.”
Jillian’s eyes filled with tears, and she covered her mouth.  She’d wanted to know how he died, but now that he was telling her, she wasn’t so sure she did.
“I couldn’t get out of the way fast enough.  Her body landed on top of me as we tumbled back down that hill, and I remember hearing all sorts of snaps and pops.”
“Oh, Mitch...”
“I was in agony, pinned under my horse, when that bastard Hennessy walked right up to me and raised his gun.  That was the last thing I remember before riding the lightning.  Been appearing as a ghost ever since.”
She sniffled and scooted closer. She wanted to soothe him, to soothe herself, and almost reached out to touch him.
“But that’s not the worst of it.”
Her heart stopped.  “How can it not be?”
He gave her a look of pure sorrow.  She scooted even closer.
“I’ve been appearing with every thunderstorm that rolls across the countryside in all the years since my death.  And every time the storm is over, I have the pleasure of getting sucked back to that day, reliving it again and again.  No matter how I try to do things different, no matter how much I try to change things, at the end of the day, I’m dead, and a new thunderstorm is brewing in your present.
“You wanted to know where I go when I disappear.  Now you know.”
Jillian didn’t know what to say.  She stared at him, not able to comprehend what he’d told her.  Not only was Mitch a ghost, but he had to relive the day of his own murder.  Every inch of her skin prickled and her eyes fairly burned.
How many times had he died?
Holy shit.
“Mitch,” she managed to say after a few moments of silence.  “Are you sure you go back?  How do you know it’s not just a memory of your death?  Maybe you’re stuck in some kind of...of limbo.  Maybe it’s just—”
“The pain, Jilly.  I know from the pain.”
She stared at him, dumbstruck.  His eyes were hollow, haunted.  He was an exhausted, lonely man, stuck in an endless loop of terror and misery.  She didn’t know what to say, what to do, that could possibly be a comfort to him.
Lifting her hand, she smoothed away the lock of hair that had fallen over his forehead.  He turned toward her and let her touch him, watching her all the while.  She felt the soft texture of his hair, the curve of his ear, and the prickly stubble on his cheek.
“I’m so sorry,” she whispered.
In that moment, something changed in the air between them.  Mitch grabbed her and dragged her to his lap before she’d even seen him move.  His arms were like bands of steel as he held her close.  He lowered his head and hid his face in her neck.
“I want it to end, Jilly,” came his tortured reply.  “I want to rest.  I want to die.  Truly die!  Why is there no heaven for me?  Why can’t I go there?”
His warm breath puffed on her skin, sending ripples of awareness across her body.  “I don’t know,” she said.  Her fingers trailed through his hair as she clung to him.
“No matter how I try to change what I do that day, no matter how many times I live it, I can’t stop what happens.  If I don’t go up the hill, Hennessy shoots me in the barn.  If I don’t go to the barn, he breaks down my front door.  If I confront him, I’m never quick enough on the draw.
“I’ve set traps for him, I’ve surprised him, I’ve even tried running away, but he always finds me, he always...kills me.”
“Don’t talk about it,” she said.  “Don’t think about it.”
“How can I not?” he asked, pulling back to look into her eyes.  “When I leave you, that’s what I’ve got to look forward to.  The only solace I have now is dying again to be with you.”
Swirling heat pooled in her belly.  What he’d just said was much too intimate for mere friends.
“When will that be?”
“Whenever there’s a thunderstorm.”
“Mitch, I...I can’t wait on the whim of the weather.  And you’re a ghost.  You’re not—”
“A real man?” he interrupted.
She nodded and held his eye contact, no matter how much it pained her to do so.  She wanted him, Lord, how she wanted him.  But this was madness.
Mitch set his jaw and twisted his hand in her hair.
“The storm’s moving on,” he whispered.
Jillian’s heart hitched.  No, not now.  Not yet.  Clutching him closer, she straddled his thighs.  “I don’t want you to go.”
“I’ve got no choice.”
“Will you think of me?  When you go back?”
“Every damn minute.”
“I don’t want you to die again!” More tears sprang to her eyes before she could stop them.
“Oh, honey, I do.  I want to die so I can come back and hold you, just like this.”
His arms tightened, bringing her flush with his body.  Every hard inch of his cock pressed against her.  She had no doubt what he wanted.  She wanted it too.  But was it even possible?
“I don’t know if we...can,” she said.
“You can feel me, right?” He raised his brow and cupped her ass.
“Yes!” she yelped.
“Then we can.  Do you want to?”
“Mitch...”  She rested her head on his shoulder.
“Jilly, I’ve gotta go, honey.”
“No.”
“I have to leave.  Tell me you want me.  Please.”
She couldn’t help herself; she kissed her way up his neck and across his cheek.  “I want you, Mitchell.”
He pulled her mouth to his in a rough kiss.  His stubble scraped her cheeks, but she didn’t care.  All she cared about was his tongue, stabbing into her, rasping against her own.  His lips were an inferno, raging on hers.
“Don’t leave me,” she whined against his mouth.
“Damn it, I have no control, Jilly.  I can’t hold on much longer.”

Going Once...Going Twice...

You may be seeing author Brenda Novak's Online Auction For Diabetes Research  mentioned on a lot of blogs, but with Gizmo Guy's diabetes diagnosis last December, diabetes research became just that much more imperative to us.  Brenda's son has Type I diabetes which is different from GG's Type II but still, diabetes can kill. And blind. And has all sorts of other nasty side effects.  So go over to Brenda's annual auction and see all the things people have generously donated to help raise money to beat this nasty condition. Then let the bidding commence.

Muppet Fun

There have been some very trying things going on here the last couple of weeks, so when I saw this video, the laugh it gave me was definitely welcome. And because I figured some of you may need a boost too...well, you can't go wrong with the Muppets now, can you?

Best Friends Forever

Yesterday I gave you a sneak peek into one of the images I'm using in the book trailers I'm making (or actually Curly will be making for me since he has more time and talent than I do when it comes to Photoshop and Final Cut). Here's another sneak peek -- here's how I envision Dillon and Brett when they were little boys and best friends.  Can't you just imagine the mischief these two could get into? It hasn't changed, they still get into a lot of mischief together, just grown up mischief these days. As Nikki finds out.

Texas Tangle at RT

OMG fellow Carina Press launch author Carrie Lofty (who will be a guest here on my blog in June) just Twittered a link to her Facebook fanpage that included some photos from the Romantic Times convention.  And what did I find there?  Go here to find out.   See the photos with the big Carina Press banner? OMG was that ever thrilling to see Texas Tangle's cover up there, and it's so frickin' huge!  It's beautiful. I want one of those banners for my office!

Oh, and while you're over there, if you have a Facebook page, take the time to "like" Carrie Lofty. She's a terrific writer! I can't wait until she visits my blog on June 8th!

And just to keep you interested in the slightly-under-two-months before Texas Tangle is released, here's a sneak peek at an image I'm using in the book trailers we're making. (Yes, book trailers, plural. Each character is getting their own trailer.)

Meet Brett...
