Guest Blogger: Curly (Part 1)

Wylie, Amy and Christine and I have treated ourselves to a girl's weekend away which means Christine will be wielding her "WRITE NOW" whip on us.

So since I won't be around to post, I've invited Curly to give his impressions of his recent trip to Disneyworld. (If you write YA, he's 18, and this might give you an idea of how this 18 year old boy/man thinks, what he notices. Oh, and he did comment that he enjoyed the days when there were more girls in his group than guys. And the pictures seem to show it (not in today's post but in tomorrow's.) In case you think he doesn't look very happy, he is, that's just Curly being cool.)

So welcome Curly!

Florida. Disney World to be specific. Wide eyed children dream about going to this paradise, adults go there to feel like kids again, and apparently teenagers go there on band trips.

Last fall, our conductor/teacher told us that this year’s senior band trip would be to Disney World if we all came to all the practices and could manage the price tag. The tag was steep, being a very, let’s say conservative (cheap), man myself I assumed I wouldn’t be going. I told mum, Leah to you I guess, about the trip in a hypothetical tone. It was the kind of tone we usually use when talking about winning lottery tickets and getting gold bars for Christmas.

I can’t remember exactly what went through my head when she told me I could go. Maybe it was “YIPPY!”, maybe it was “Oh crap this is going to take some doing.” Thanks Mom and Dad, I couldn’t ask for better parents.

Waking up at 1:30 in the morning as a teenager is like watching the sun rise over the western horizon, it just doesn’t happen. However, I was able to stomach it and Mum and I braved the repulsive cold to get to school for 2:00 AM. We loaded the bus, I gave Mum one last hug and boarded.

An hour later we were at the airport; I don’t like airports. Maybe it’s the fact that there are security guards everywhere and looking at them wrong can get you a cavity search. That being said I got through customs in less than three seconds. Luckily I like planes just fine, so the next three hours passed quickly.

When we landed in Tampa we were, for lack of a better word, flabbergasted. We could actually take off our winter coats, heck we could take off our sweaters. Twenty-two degrees Celsius in February! I was so amazed I took some pictures of the lack of snow.

From Tampa we were off to Lake Buena Vista to the glorious Fairfield Marriott “Village” resort. Pretty much all that happened that day other then a band practice was swimming and tanning, we were all so tired and our Disney tickets weren’t valid yet.

Even though we were in Florida we still had school to do. On the second day, the first day we left the hotel, we were to play at the dockside stage in Downtown Disney, Disney World’s massive outdoor shopping centre.

So early the next day we woke up and got shipped to downtown Disney wearing a full dress tuxedo. I don’t remember too vividly the details, but I had forgotten to sun-block my face and it burned something terrible during the performance. Everything comes back clear once we were on the bus again being congratulated.

People who work at Disney World are called cast members. For performing for the shoppers at their stage we were named honorary cast members. Of course because of this whenever I saw a door to a power station or kitchen that said “Cast members only” I felt terribly tempted. Our band was given a “Mouscar” a trophy of Mickey tipping his hat and a cinch bag that said “Disney Performing Arts” on it.

After that we were taken back to the hotel to change out of our spiffy tuxedos into something more appropriate. From there we were off to the magic kingdom.

Yeah, I wear a sweater and coat in summer weather. It’s just a thing I do. Right after this shot, I took an identical picture of a girl in our group, she texted it back to one her friends back home with the caption “So… what are you doing today?”

Every half hour there was a parade of some sort and every time I passed the magic castle there was a play or musical being performed, usually involving Peter Pan. Everything there was awesome, maybe not the prices but you get my meaning. I went to a bunch of shows, took in the scenery and rode a couple rides. Oh and the monorail was awesome too. I actually got to ride in the spacious nose compartment.

On the third day we were to take a class called “You’re Instrumental” at the Saratoga Springs resort. So we rode to Saratoga and took a class from a Disney director. We learned a lot about performing music for movie soundtracks and how professional music is recorded. They even put the music we played to “The Beauty and the Beast” as background music.

From there we headed off to Hollywood Studios. There were comedy acts and parades every few blocks here as well, each one of them well worth the time. My group and I rode “The Movie Ride” and watched the 3D Muppetvision show (if you go to a 3D show in Disney, you will get wet) among other things. Oh, and there was Fantasmic. That show was amazing, they were able to project light onto a fountain like a movie screen. The fireworks and lightshow was unbeatable.

Tomorrow, I'll post some more of his observations about Epcot - and his opinion of how Canada is portrayed.

All my bags are packed, I'm SO ready to go

As I posted yesterday, I'm 'abandoning' Gizmo Guy and the boys for a wild girl's weekend away and won't be back until Monday. Yup, that's how Gizmo Guy worded it - I was abandoning them. Yes, he was joking. They'll get along fine. The house I'm not so sure about, but then I haven't been looking after it so great myself lately. I can just seem them running around crazily on Monday morning, loading the dishwasher and such. In fact, if I know GG, he'll delegate that to GH who will delegate everything to Curly. Hmm. Maybe I should have gone away last week while Curly was gone.

Tomorrow and Sunday's posts are already written and will post automatically thanks to my guest blogger - Curly - who will be sharing with you some thoughts about his trip to Disneyworld last week. I will say that in a lot of his pictures he doesn't look particularly happy, but he's told me that he was attempting to look 'cool' instead of like a geeky tourist. I think the one picture we have of him smiling is when he's surrounded by girls. Yeah, that's enough to make any 18 year old boy smile, isn't it?

My big news is that I now have a release date for Personal Protection aka Sam's Story - May 12th. I've had a sneak peak at the cover too, but I can't share that with you until it's approved and it's up on Samhain's Coming Soon page. Which won't happen until I create and submit the blurb, tagline and warnings. (Guess what I've been trying to do while I pack?) I'm sending them in before I leave this morning and hopefully in a couple of weeks I'll be able to share everything with you.

I'll be back Monday afternoon - in the meantime, have a great weekend, and don't forget to drop by and leave some comments for Curly. He'll probably need some lovin' if he does end up being the low man on the housework totem pole.

Mini-Mac bites the big one

My poor little iBook is dead. As I was using it on Tuesday night, I noticed it was going slower and slower, until it finally just ground to a halt. I ended up having to do a hard shut down on it. It never came back.

Gizmo Guy sat down with it when he got home last night and discovered the hard drive is fried. When he looked into what it would take to replace it - he shook his head and said there was no way it could easily be done. You have to take the keyboard off, the airport card out, some other magnetic strip out, take out a whole bunch of screws that are all specific lengths for their specific holes, take the back off ... well, basically everything is built around the hard drive and must be taken apart. The video he showed me of how to do it had the thing resembling a Swiss watch someone had taken apart.

So ... my Mini-Mac is officially dead and not worth reviving. Poor little thing.

As is usual for computers, its timing was impeccable because I really needed it this weekend for a girls' weekend writing retreat I'm going on. Now I'm going to have to export my WIP from its beloved Scrivener format and go back to using Word on my Sony, then import it back into Scrivener on the Desktop. Ugh.

However, I have to look on the bright side. Things could have been worse. It could have died on Friday afternoon once I'd arrived at our destination hours from home and left me writing on paper. Akkk! The horror!

Or even worse, it could have died Sunday night and fried the thousands of words I'd added for my WIP during our marathong writing sessions this weekend. (Hey, you never know. I plan to be productive.)

Guitar Hero says "Thanks" to everyone who wished him happy birthday. Then asked why no one had given him a present by flashing their ... well, fill in your own body part. Yes, he really said that. And yes, it was VERY tongue-in-cheek. But I felt obliged to pass along his comment.

While I'm away, Curly will be my "guest blogger" - he's written up his thoughts on his trip to Florida, along with pictures. I've set them to auto-post on Saturday and Sunday.

Happy Birthday, Guitar Hero

Happy Birthday, Guitar Hero

This is me (and Guitar Hero) twenty-four years and one week ago.

And this is him twenty-four years ago. All nine pounds, three ounces of him.

Yes, I can hear Amy scoffing about how 'little' that is, compared to her Sumo. But compared to the six pound baby my sister had a few weeks later, GH was HUGE!

Hidden limitation of eInk technology

Thanks to a post over on Twitter, I found this article. I hadn't realized it but apparently Kindles and Sony readers both have temperature limitations. If you let a Kindle get below 40 degrees (Fahrenheit), you run the risk of the eInk screen dying. Apparently the Sony Reader is similar.

NOW I find this out - I took my Sony Reader with me the other night when I was waiting to meet Curly. It was definitely below 40 degrees Fahrenheit, more like closer to 0. I wasn't running the car the whole time, and I'm not sure I did let it get below zero, but I'd brought a quilt along with me to keep me warm so I wouldn't have to keep running the car/wasting gas/polluting the environment. I guess I must have kept it warm enough because my Reader is still working fine.

According to Mr. Bilmes' blog, just carrying it around in your purse or your backpack as you're waiting for the bus can cause the machines to malfunction. And heaven forbid you leave it in the car. Not good to find out if you live in Canada where six months of the year we're below 30, let alone 40 F.

Exhausted after Passion

I'm brain dead today. Comes from being up over 22 hours yesterday. I had another one of those nights between Friday and Saturday where I woke up at 2 a.m. and couldn't get back to sleep. I ended up rolling out of bed at 4:30. Trouble was I'd invited myself to a party with my sister last night and didn't get home until midnight. So yeah, exhausted today even though I slept last night.

I'd been talking with my sister on Thursday when she mentioned a friend of hers was holding a Passion Party. I'd never heard of them, so I googled while we were talking and realized Passion Parties are all about sex. Edible creams, lotions, vibrators, toys galore. So I asked if I could go with her.

I joined in with about ten other women, and it was a real hoot, especially one of the hostesses, Kim, who is a natural to sell their products. Luckily I'd stuck some cover flats and excerpt brochures in my purse before I went, because as soon as they discovered I write erotica, ears perked up. I'd also bought my Sony reader, and several people had never heard of the reader, and a couple others had said they'd seen them and wanted one, but seeing one, holding one and being able to play with it made up their minds that they wanted one themselves. Hey, more converts to the dark side.

No Oscar buzz from this corner, not a fan of any of this years' movies, won't be watching the show. Maybe I'll watch the red carpet bit, but after that I'll probably fall asleep in my chair.

Off and Running

As you read in my last post, Curly arrived home at 1:30 a.m. and we were back in the house by 2 a.m. He said his flight was rough at the start - there were thunderstorms over Georgia. In his words, "It was freaky to look down out your window and see lightning."

They took off 20 minutes early, so landed 20 minutes early but were delayed in disembarking. Apparently one of the passengers suffered what appeared to be a heart attack on the flight so they had to wait for the paramedics to load him up and take him off first.

But he's home!

Without souvenirs. *pout* He said he looked through all the stores, but it was all junky stuff like keychains and things. I asked if they didn't at least have T-shirts, but ... yeah, no prezzies. He also said he'd looked for a Simba Hat we'd bought him when we were last there - it had ears and everything - but apparently they don't carry them anymore. *more pouting*

He took lots of pictures, including a video of him on the Mad Hatter Teapot ride. He went on it, just him and a teacher who took video of him, he said he did it especially for me. *Awww* Now I just have to load it. (I really would like to put up the clip of him riding it that we took when he was four so we could do a 'then and now' comparison, but a while back Gizmo Guy transferred it from video tape onto a DVD, and I can't find a software program on my PC (or GG's) that will let us capture the clip. It's not in the right format for MovieMaker, and my Roxio keeps crashing, though I'm not sure if it would be in the right format for that either. If anyone has any suggestions of what package I could use to do that, let me know. )

He says he had a great time, though he has a strong opinion about the way Canada is portrayed at Epcot. And from his description and some of his pictures, I have to agree. I've asked if he'd do a blog post of his trip for me, and include some of his pictures, so maybe that'll be up this weekend.

Even though he didn't get to bed until very early this morning, he was up and ready for school at the proper time - without me having to wake him. In fact, he was up and dressed before I stumbled down still wearing my jammies. I told him he could sleep in today, take the day off to recover, even Guitar Hero urged him to stay home, since Curly looked like he was flagging before he left, but he's got a perfect attendance record that he insists he wants to keep intact. He's got more staying power than I do.

Curly landed!

Yay! I've missed him (can't you tell?)

Duration: 2 hours 16 minutes (runway to runway)
Status: Landed on the runway at 11:27 PM - On Time. (Actually they were 28 minutes early)

Of course he still has to get through customs, get his luggage, get on the bus and get out of Toronto and get home, but he's safe back on land. (Did I mention I don't like flying? And that plane that crashed near Buffalo last week crashed only hours before he left for Florida? Or how that freaked both GG and I out a little bit?)

Back in the Groove

My WIP is trucking along. I added 2600 words yesterday and another 2500 so far today (actually a bit more, I deleted about 500 in notes I'd written ahead of time for today's scenes, but Scrivener deletes that from your progress chart, so to get to a positive you have to replace what you deleted.) Best of all I've started dreaming about it, so I'm getting into the story. I find it SO much easier to write when I can get that deep into the storyline. Trouble was last night's dream was more of a nightmare - it was a rather dark scene I'd plotted as an inciting incident. But the dream added a twist I hadn't considered before. Bonus!

I also finished an interview this afternoon. I'll give you the details on the when and the where once I hear the date it'll be posted. I had to answer 20 questions. When they sent them, they said not to worry about conciseness. Well, if you read this blog, you know I seldom worry about conciseness, so that wasn't a problem. I love rambling on. (like now)

I have to stay up late again tonight - Curly gets back from Florida at 1:30 a.m. Ugh. Of course, the rain they predicted to arrive this afternoon arrived in the form of snow. That should be fun for him to come down in. I've not heard a word from him since he left, I really hope he's had fun. I tried to get a clip of the last time he was in Disneyworld - he was four and we were on the Mad Hatters Teacup ride. It's a beautiful little clip of him laughing his head off, but neither GG nor I could figure out how to transfer it from the DVD we've had made of it to a form I could post.

Clean up on Aisle 4

funny pictures
My edits are done! Woohoo! Although I expect they may come back. In addition to wanting an extra love scene, my editor made a single line suggestion that ended up having me delete a scene and replace it with a couple more to solve something that bugged her about the ending. My 73K story is now over 80K (including the dedication and author bio). But I think it works better, and I am happy with the ending even though it is a bit darker than it was originally. But personally I like dark and tormented heroes.

Since I've been ignoring everyone around the house for the past week while I've concentrated on doing the edits, I took Guitar Hero grocery shopping with me this morning. We were getting low on everything. Gizmo Guy and I had planned to go out yesterday, but forgot (or didn't realize) all the stores would be closed thanks to Dalton McGuinty's new Family Day. (Who wants a day off in February when it's cold and yucky - yes I know it's a long time without a day off between Christmas and Easter, but still ... it's Canada! There's nothing to do this time of year.)

The grocery store was a nightmare. I guess everyone else had done the same thing as we had, and it was worse than a regular Saturday shop. It didn't help that a local school had brought a busload of grade five or six kids to teach them to 'shop' or something. They each had baskets and arrived at the cashiers at the same time as almost everyone else in the store. So picture the students, and at least twelve cartloads lined up behind the two cashiers that were open. Do you see the faces on the customers? Especially when the cash register at one of the aisles stops scanning correctly and they had to call for help? Why someone couldn't have called for more registers to be opened, I have no idea, but I wasn't thrilled with the store management this morning. Luckily I was the second in line, otherwise I would have been tempted just to leave my cart where it was and walk away, letting the frozen vegetables and the ice cream melt. So what should have been a 30-40 minute trip out, became a two hour excursion.

Anyway, I'm back, groceries are put away for the most part, and I'm blogging instead of working on my WIP. I did work on it a bit this morning, got another thousand words done, but I think I'm going to have to buckle down and FastDraft this sucker.

And over on All Romance eBooks PP is listed as a Featured Staff Pick as part of their "Weekly Sizzle" newsletter.

How cool is that?

Locking Myself in My Cave

I'm still working on my edits for Personal Protection and I think I'm confusing myself the more I edit. I've had a discussion with my editor about what direction to take the changes she's asked for, and I think I'm back on the right track, but I need to focus completely on getting them done so I'll probably be quiet here for the next few days.

Sorry if I'm not getting around to comment on people's blogs...hopefully I'll be back soon.

Look in thy Heart

Happy Valentine's Day

I'm blogging over on the Samhain main blog today - it'll go up at 9 a.m. I've done another movie meme using my favorite romantic movies. Leave me a comment with the name of the movie from the quotes you recognize and you'll get your name added beside the quote. Hey, it's free publicity - a way to get your name out there ...

Oh, and I got sucked into that phenom known as 'Twittering' so if you're on Twitter, look me up (I'm listed as LeahBraemel). I'm still slowly finding my way around the place, and I can tell already it's going to be a time suck, but I'm enjoying staying in touch with my friends.

Don't forget The Samhellion Valentine's Swag hunt is still going on. It'll finish tomorrow, so the clock is ticking. And while you're over there, download some of the free stories Samhain authors have contributed. They're great for quick reading.

With Curly off in Disneyworld, I told Guitar Hero we'd really appreciate it if he spent this Valentine's Day over at Blue Monkey's. He has very kindly obliged. So we have the house to ourselves. I cannot remember the last time that happened. I think it was probably back in 2005 when Gizmo Guy was still working from home and Guitar Hero was in college. Naturally, we're going to take advantage of the situation - which means I'm not going to today's Toronto Romance Writers monthly meeting. Nope. I'm going to let Gizmo Guy take me out for lunch. He's been looking at what movies are out - if he finds anything we think worth it, we'll head out for an afternoon show, and then come home to take advantage of having no one in the house to ... um ... yeah, well, you know. We're gonna veg out on the couch and watch TV. (Right, and if you buy that one, I've got some land for sale. In the Okefenokee.)

Oh, and if you were wondering about the title, it's from here, which I think is a perfect quote for writers:
"Biting my truant pen, beating myself for spite: "Fool!" said my muse to me, "look in thy heart, and write.""
~ Sir Philip Sidney (1554-1586)

Friday, 13 February, 2009

So that's who said that!

If you notice the time this is posted and you think "Hey, she must have written this the day before," nope. I really am up at 3:30 AM. Curly had to be up at his school for 0215 as the band members gathered for their trip to Florida. That's right, 2 A.M. on a Friday the 13th.

It was frickin' cold out there today waiting for the teacher to open up the school so some of the kids could get their instruments, and then we had to wait for the bus to arrive, load up and leave. But now Curly is headed into Toronto's Pearson Airport and from there to Disneyworld. (It's rather silly that you're supposed to be there two to three hours ahead of your flight to clear customs, but the airport doesn't open until a half hour before your flight. Sort of one of your classic "Hurry up and Wait" moments.)

So if you happen to be visiting Disneyworld in the next few days and you pass by a band playing in one of the various venues on Main Street or the MGM studios lot, it may be Curly and his school band serenading you.

(The pictures show what Curly looked like the last time he visited Disneyworld. He's the littlest one. I love the picture of him in that Simba hat. I told him if he could find one to buy another one. Although I still have that one tucked in a box under my bed, but it's well worn and well loved.)

Anyway, the cold completely woke me up so I've spent the last hour working on my edits for Personal Protection. I FINALLY figured out an ending that should answer Angela's concerns. Now I have to add one more scene and then I should be done. Until the next level of edits, anyway.

Don't forget to check out the Samhellion Valentine's Swag hunt which goes until the 15th. As I posted yesterday, there's a chance to win one of 12 Samhain eBooks. Also, don't forget to check out my blog over on the Samhain main blog site tomorrow morning and see how many romantic movie quotes you recognize.

Now for Wednesday's movie meme answers ...and I have to say you guys did really good, but Amy's the winner for movie quote trivia.

1. Some woman is gonna want me to do it to her and I'm not gonna know what it is! = Tom Hanks in Sleepless in Seattle

15. Are you going to bring me that martini, or do I have to suck it out of the glass from here? = Joanne Whalley in The Man Who Knew Too Little

17. In a few minutes I would be free or dead...or Rodolfo Lasparri of Palermo, Sicily! = Matthew Broderick in The Freshman (which was filmed in Toronto, by the way)

21. And, fortunately, when there aren't any cookies, we can still find reassurance in a familiar hand on our skin, or a kind and loving gesture, or subtle encouragement, or a loving embrace, or an offer of comfort, not to mention hospital gurneys and nose plugs, an uneaten Danish, soft-spoken secrets, and Fender Stratocasters, and maybe the occasional piece of fiction. = Emma Thompson in Stranger Than Fiction

23. It is no more crazy than a dog finding a rainbow. = Liev Schrieber explaining how he found a way to time travel in Kate and Leopold

25. The question isn't "what are we going to do," the question is "what aren't we going to do?" = Matthew Broderick from Ferris Bueller

Are you kicking yourself yet?

Blowing My Own Horn

Private Property is STILL on the My Bookstore and More Bestsellers list. It's slowly going down, but it's hanging in at #9 this morning. That's over two weeks now it's been on the list, and three more releases of Samhain books since it first appeared. Woot Woot!

I'm going to leave the Movie Meme game open for today as well, see if anyone can guess those last few strangling movie quotes. You're going to kick yourself when you see where most of them came from - I'm betting you've seen them. Here's some hints as to the speakers (in alphabetical order): Matthew Broderick, Michael Douglas, Will Farrell, Tom Hanks, Liev Schreiber, Emma Thompson, Sigourney Weaver, Joanne Whalley, Bruce Willis (but not for the movie quote Wylie thought).

And since I enjoyed doing this movie meme so much here, I have set one up for quotes from my favorite Romantic Movies for my Valentine's Day post over on the main Samhain blog. I've got a link on the sidebar, and I'll post again on Saturday to remind you. But drop by and see how many quotes you remember there.

OH, and I'm now part of the Samhellion Valentine's Swag hunt. You've got from now until February 15th to enter. Since there are TWELVE, yes, 12, authors participating in this round, that means you have TWELVE chances to win an ebook. What are you waiting for?

Going Cross-eyed

My editor sent me her edits for Personal Protection the other day. As I was scrolling through them, I thought, "Hey, these aren't bad, it won't take me long to do these."

HA!

In addition to asking for an extra scene, Angie made a suggestion for a small change she'd like to the end of the story that is now making me go through the whole thing word by word, line by line, to make sure the story stays consistent with the new ending. It's taking me forever! And I still have to finish the new ending, and write the extra scene.

So no forward writing on my WIP so far this week. Arrgh.

And one last hurrah! Private Property is still on the My Bookstore and More bestsellers list - since there was a release last Tuesday, and another on Friday, it dropped from #1 last Thursday to #2, then has slowly been making its way down the list to where it is at #8 today. Since today is another release day, I fully expect it'll drop off completely tomorrow. But what a ride!

Where is Leah today?

Nope, it's not another link to a guest blog I've done. (Thank the Good Lord for THAT!, I can hear you sigh.)

On Saturday a friend of mine emailed me that I'd been mentioned on a specific site back on January 31st. Even though I have a Google Alert set up for "Leah Braemel" I'd had no idea this particular vaulted person knew who I was, let alone might mention me. So I decided to do a little Googling. It's really interesting to find some of the places where "Leah Braemel" is being talked about.

I already knew about my feature over on The Romance Studio, and my links on Manic Readers, Coffee Time Romance, as well as the times I've been mentioned or commented on other authors' blogs. Then there are all the other ebook selling sites: CyberReads, Diesel Books, Millennium Promotion, Books on Board, amongst other places. Then there was this Albanian site that listed the trailer I did for Private Property, that was a surprise discovery.

But I think my discovery of this site: "Is This Your Name" was the most fun. (To get facts on your name, click on the Home/Search button at the top right hand of that page.)

Top 5 Facts for the Name Leah Braemel:

  1. 45% of the letters are vowels. Of one million first and last names we looked at, 11.2% have a higher vowel make-up. This means you are very well envoweled.
  2. In ASCII binary it is... 01001100 01100101 01100001 01101000 00100000 01000010 01110010 01100001 01100101 01101101 01100101 01101100
  3. Backwards, it is Hael Lemearb... nice ring to it, huh?
  4. In Pig Latin, it is Eahlay Aemelbray.
  5. People with this first name are probably: Female. So, you are constantly overcharged for beauty products.

3 Things You Didn't Know:

  1. Your personal power animal is the Siberian Chipmunk
  2. Your 'Numerology' number is 1. If it wasn't bulls**t, it would mean that you are ambitious, independent, and self-sufficient. Although you are generally happy, loving, dynamic and charismatic, you can sometimes be egotistical, selfish and melodramatic.
  3. According to the US Census Bureau°, 0.072% of US residents have the first name 'Leah' and fewer than 0.001% have the surname 'Braemel'. The US has around 300 million residents, so we guesstimate there is only 1 American who goes by the name Leah Braemel.
Actually, there's only one CANADIAN who goes by the name Leah Braemel - which is why I chose it. I prefer to be unique thank you, especially since there are three ladies in my home town alone that share my real name. (Since most doctors send you to a central lab in town, I often get calls from doctors' offices giving me information for medical tests I haven't had. Scary.)

While I totally agree with item #2 in the "Things You Don't Know" list (which by the way, I do know that about me) , what's that business of my "power animal" being a Siberian Chipmunk? Surely I'm a much more scary and powerful animal. Something like a tiger or lynx or a bobcat. Something with teeth and claws that can tear apart its foe with little effort. Okay, given that I live in a country that's cold six months of the year, maybe a Siberian tiger, but a chipmunk? I don't think so.

Then as I continued scrolling down through the list Google provided, I found a link that stopped me cold. Oh. My. God. My blog, and a blog post I wrote back in December, is quoted and linked to in David Baldacci's blog. How cool is that?

Mea Culpa

Oh oh. I've been SO good about blogging lately, and here I've forgotten to blog for two days! Yikes. At least the weather's finally warmed to above zero and the eight-inch-thick blocks of ice on the roof are starting to melt.

I've been hunkered down working both on writing the next in my series, and finishing some more edits my editor sent me. I got a sneak peak at my cover for Personal Protection and am quite pleased with the almost-finished product, especially since I know this one will eventually be on the cover of a book I'll be able to hold in my hand.

15 Samhain authors have written Valentine's Day short stories that are available for free download again. And once again, I adored Inez Kelley's submission. Don't miss reading her Frisky Business (especially if you read her New Year's Eve story - it follows the same couple). It's really sweet. As is Shelley Munro's The Important Things, and my friend from Montreal, Anne Hope's Her Heart's Desire. Oh, and don't forget that every four days, there is a new Swag Hunt over on The Samhellion. Swag Hunt #2 ends tonight at midnight. Don't wait until I'm on the list (which will be during Swag Hunt #4) because there's still a chance to win free books. Always a good thing.

Private Property is still on the Bestseller's list over at My Bookstore and More, it's been bumped from the top spot since there have been two release days since its release, but it's hanging in at #6 today.

I almost forgot! I'm blogging over at The Samhellion blog today - a chatty post about how I've broken a vow I took in childhood.

Back on track

It's been so cold out today, that it's been tough to keep the house warm. I've got the thermostat cranked up to 70 (generally it's set to 68), but the office area is still bordering the lower end of the 60s. I'm at the point where I want to wear gloves while I'm typing.

I've written close to 3200 words today on Andy's story. I ended up scrapping the original plot line - I'll be able to keep it but realized that the plot would be better suited to Cooper's story which will be further down the road - possibly book #4 or 5 if the series sells well. (Why do I always have these revelations when I'm close to 25K in?)

And that darned futuristic erotica is calling to me again. I'm starting to wonder if I should work on writing one in the morning and the other one in the evening. Especially since I can see the erotica being more of a novella than a full length novel. Grr.

I have to keep repeating the mantra: "Put the shinys away, Leah; they'll still sparkle when you take them out to play next time."

Mom's Payback

Private Property's still at number #1 on the Samhain Bestseller list, but I fully expect this is my last day. Anya Bast's Taken shot up the charts the first day it was released and is currently at #2. Still, it's been a heckuva a week.

Curly and Guitar Hero have both made it clear that they are grossed out/disgusted/horrified/*insert your adjective here* by the final YouTube video I posted yesterday. That's what they get for reading my blog. They know what I write after all.

So Curly? Guitar Hero? These are for you!

Think I embarrassed 'em enough yet?

How did she do that again?

My last guest blog spot is over at Rose Marie Wolf's today - it's a big blanket shout of thanks to everyone who has emailed me, commented on my blogs (here and elsewhere), and just helped boost my confidence in the myriad of ways you have.

I am now officially blogged out. And so I offer you some more videos, starting with another one my sister sent me. In her email she said I wouldn't be able to watch it just once. She was right.

Since I really wanted to figure out how to do this so simply, I searched through YouTube to see if there was an English translation. There was, so I'm sharing it with you too, because now I HAVE to try this.

And I just HAD to include this one which has NOTHING to do with shirt folding, but I couldn't resist the title. If nothing else, you'll learn a whole slew of new slang terms for a man's "21st digit".

And since a new batch of Samhain ebooks were released today, this may be the last chance I have to bug you with this, but yes ...

Monday Catch-up

Woohoo! Private Property is still #1 over on the My Bookstore and More Bestsellers List. That's four straight days at the top, and it's been on the top ten since it was released!
This month I'm featured over at The Romance Studio's Blue page ... you have to scroll down about three quarters of the page to find little old me, or you can go straight to the feature by clicking here. (One of these days I'll tell you just how photoshopped that photo of me is! Guitar Hero went all out, I tell you.)

I spent the weekend doing edits on Personal Protection and sent them in to my editor this afternoon. Weird part of it is that Angela hadn't sent them to me, they were things I'd caught on my own - consistency in timeline or clothing or where someone was or wasn't.

That all started because I've been reading Karen Wiesner's book "First Draft in 30 Days" wondering if I can use it for the latest work in progress which has been shuffled beneath all the promo for Private Property I've been doing this last week. Karen's book has a lot of charts to help you plot your draft so you don't have to revise as much later. In order to fill out some of the character charts she provides, I needed to go back through Personal Protection to discover what I'd already written about Andy and started thinking "OMG, why did Angela buy this? There's an error, and there's an error" and worse ... "But he's not even in this scene so how can he be speaking?" Angela said she'd be happy to accept a revision before she started editing it herself. I'm happy, or happier, with the result and I hope the changes should make my editor's job a tad easier when she goes through to do her 'real' edits. (Always a good thing to keep your editor happy.)

Anyway, that's done, and I've started filling out Karen's charts and now I've had all sorts of plot bunnies attacking with ideas of ways to torture my characters. Always a good thing.
And I've got four, count 'em, FOUR courses going on this month, though two of them are on Marketing and Publicity that I figured I could lurk in. (Yeah, right, you know me - I have an opinion on everything. I'm not likely to lurk, as those over in Mandy Roth and Michelle Pillow's Marketing on a Budget course have already discovered.) The other one I'm really excited about is the Kiss of Death's Private Investigator's course - since I'm writing a series about a group of PI's it's perfect timing!
Curly came home with his itinerary for his upcoming trip to Florida. We have to have him to the school at 2:30 a.m. Yes, AM. in order to get on the bus to catch his flight on Friday the 13th. *fingers crossed, I hate flying and flying on Friday the 13th? Shudder* (Don't worry, Curly, everything will be fine! I'm having a Mommy Moment.) And he got his exam results back - he got the highest mark of his class in physics. Woo hoo! He deserves ... well, a trip to Florida, I guess.

Let the games begin!

Head on over to The Samhellion - they've brought back the free downloads of short stories - this time they're Valentine's Day themed. And also starting today, you can have a chance of winning free e-books donated by 36 Samhain Authors. That's right, it's the Valentine's Day Swag hunt. So warm up those mouse wheels and start clicking the links.
