So tell us, Skylar, what was the very first story you wrote about? Do you still have it?
*blushes* Yes, I still have it. It was a first-person paranormal, and while I think the concept is solid, I look back and cringe at the writing. It was chock full of detail overload, plot holes, and sloppy phrasing. At the same time, I wrote it two years ago, and am amazed by how much I have learned in that time, due greatly to the incredible members of my local RWA chapter and Passionate Ink, the online erotica chapter of RWA.When reading, what makes you want to toss a book across the room and never read any more?
Do you have a favorite book (someone else has written) that you keep as a 'comfort read'?
Do you "cast" your characters using pictures of actors or models to help inspire you when you're writing?
What did you do when you got "the email" telling you Samhain had bought Maison Domine? How did you celebrate? One strange writing ritual I have is .... plotting out my stories in an oversized sketchpad using markers. Yes, the ones we were given in elementary school to scribble with.
I love listening to .... Chris Young.(Leah here ... I'd not heard of Chris Young before, so I did a little Googling. What a niiiice looking man - I foresee a cowboy showing up in one of my stories soon. I would have put in a video from YouTube, but the best ones have embedding disabled)
My worst habit is ... compulsively checking my e-mail.
(Leah here - I think I'm busted on that one too. But, um, in my defence, I'm betting most of us have that compunction.)
My favorite movie is ... WALL-E, because it was not only the sweetest love story, but made me think about the state of our environment and the effect of technology on human society, all while being a movie perfectly suitable for itty bitties.
Where can we find more information about you? Why that's simple - Skylar's website: www.skylarkade.com (Thanks to Karen and Booklover pointing out that they can't get into Skylar's website - while it works for me in Firefox, I can't get past the splash page in IE8 ... this is a link to the front page but apparently the menus aren't available either. Here are the individual links: Books, News and Updates, Links, and About Skylar. I'll let her know that there's an issue with the browsers ...
(Or we can stalk her on Twitter: @skylarkade )
And thanks to Booklover1335 for pointing out I hadn't included a blurb of Skylar's Maison Domine:
Organic chemist Dr. Lara Brunner needs a reality check. When her health falls victim to an overwhelming schedule, she decides drastic measures must be taken. After weeks of dreams--erotic dreams invaded by whips and chains--Lara reluctantly visits a BDSM resort for two days of submissive exploration. For a control-freak like Dr. Brunner, submission is a daunting task. While she hoped to leave the resort refreshed and wet-dream-free, Lara never imagined she would spend her time falling for a completely unattainable man.
Bestselling novelist Jaxon Greene is an expert Dominant who never wants more than a weekend fling – until he meets Lara. Growing bored and disillusioned with weak-willed submissives, Jax finds himself entranced by the feisty chemist. Unlike most women he’s trained, Lara has a fiery independence that truly challenges the Dominant in him. He can tame her body with ease – but can he ensnare her heart?

Since Skylar's book isn't out, I'm going to be offering up the contest prize today - winner's choice of any e-book from Samhain Publishing.
Oh, and Skylar's one of those lucky ducks at the RWA conference in DC this week, so she'll try to pop in during the day, but the internet at the hotel isn't easily available. (Can you imagine a conference booking a hotel that doesn't have WiFi?)

I so envy those lucky people attending the RWA in DC. I would love one day to be able to attend. Oh well, maybe next year.
Skylar, I love the tagline on your website, but I couldn't get into it. Is it not yet ready for visitors?
And Leah, you're right...I'm a compulsive email checker too. In fact, I'm off next to check email again!
Karen - Skylar's website has a splash page on it to weed out those under 18. You have to click on the box that says "Enter Site" at the bottom left to get into it.
(I'm using Firefox, I'm not sure if that makes a difference...)
Congrats, Skylar!! Samhain puts out good stuff, so... :D
Congrats on your first book. I love Samhain, and they have all the best authors and books around.
Congrats on your first published book! Since the interview didn't really mention much about the story I of course had to go check out your website, but like Karen H I couldn't get into the website :( I never saw and enter button with my browser (internet explorer 7 & 8)
Would love to learn more about your book so that I know what to look for on Samhain. Tried their website too and though your name is listed, they only have your bio :(
Anyways best of luck on it's release!
Booklover (and Karen) -- thanks for pointing out about the link not working for you, and that there isn't a blurb for Maison Domine. I've edited the post and given a different link - see if it works for you. And I've included a blurb (you may have to refresh your page to see the edits)
Congrats on your first book. I love Chris Young. He has such a sexy voice. Have a great day.
congrats on the new story. Sounds good. And I just love samhain's books. always great stories and quality reads.
congrats on your new book. It must be exciting to sell one for the first time. I really like Wall-E too. Pixar is amazing, I always look forward to their movies every year. I haven't seen UP yet but I must before the end of the summer.
Congrats on your upcoming debut, Skylar! What a thrill! And hope you're enjoying RWA! Lucky duck indeed! ;)
Hi Skylar,Congrats on your release! It's so nice to hear about new Authors how they started out.Best wishes!
Congrats on your first published book, how exciting for you! And I hope you're enjoying the RWA conference! I wish I were there.
Hey lovely commenters, Skylar here! I'm currently sitting in the lobby of the Marriot, paying out the ear for wifi, so I'll make it quick -- and I'll be back later! Thanks for the well-wishes; its so great to see such enthusiasm! To housemouse88, I got to see Chris Young do a VERY small acoustic concert and met him afterwards *swoon* so I'm a huge fan. To everyone who had trouble accessing the site, I hope everything got figured out, but as the hotel is blocking my naughty content, I can't double-check for technical errors.
xoxo Skylar, who is TRYING to behave while in DC, but so far has been unsuccessful ;)
Congrats on getting published!! The blurb sounds fantastic! I will be keeping my eyes open for it!! I would love to go to a reader convention.... I think Leah and I are carpooling next year to RT convention :D Although, I guess I should tell her that I don't drive huh? *grin*
I love Chris Young. I've been following him since Nashville Star. Congrats on your book being published. It sounds great.

Thanks Leah for highlighting Skylar's book. I love learning about new authors and the blurb for her upcoming story sounds like my favorite kind of read.
Skylar, hope RWA is a blast!
Skylar, Ellen Bunch is having problems leaving comments, so she's forwarded this to be posted:
"I look forward to reading Skylar's book - we have a mutual interest, cabana boys."
Looks like a good story. Congrats on the release. Samhain is a top publisher with a lot of my favourite authors.

No need to enter me, doll, but man, it's nice of you to offer up today's prize. Cruel, too. How does a girl pick only ONE????
I've got this up at Win a Book for ya. Even though I should be working on some fiction of my own!
Hi Skylar,
Congrats on your debut release. have fun at RWA.
Congrats on your first book! How exciting for you :)
I'm sad to be missing RWA this year. Loads of my friends are there. DC is just too expensive :( Hope you're having the time of your life!
It's Skylar again, and everyone is just so NICE here! I hope to make it to RT next year, and would love to meet readers. Find me on Facebook or Twitter to stay updated/connected! And here's a HUGE thanks to Leah for being kind enough to host a noob like me!
xoxo Skylar, who was actually asked today how she does her research.
Congrats on your first release, Skylar.
Hi Skylar! So great to meet you! I must go visit your site and read that Bio myself, love it! Skylar, you think that first book you wrote, that you'd ever go back and put it to where your experience has brought you to today? LOL on the purple prose. I can't hear music but that's ok, I still love to oogle at any cut guy with a cowboy hat on! Again so good to meet you and looking forward to reading more about your book! Any estimate when you're book will be out? Too you working on other books at the same time?
Leah, I'm so not techy. I don't know what WiFi is. LOL
Caffey - WiFi (pronounced like High Fi) stands for "Wireless Fidelity" It's that system that lets laptops and computers connect wirelessly to the internet or a local area network. Nowadays they're crucial as almost everyone brings a laptop with them when traveling so they can keep up with their email and stay in touch with messaging systems.
(Yeah, I used to be a tech support analyst for Bell Sympatico - one of Canada's main internet providers. And I used to teach computers, so I am a geek who is married to a computer engineer. Double geek.)
Congrats on your first book! I hope we'll have many more in the future!
It is always fun to find a new author to follow. Samhain is one of my favorite publishers and I will look for your book.
Samhain has so many great authors that I'm hoping to see go to print. Your definitely amung them.
