Immortalizing JK Coi

My regular followers are already familiar with JK Coi - she, Kimber Chin and I got together back in June and wrote a cross-genre short story. JK (a fellow Toronto Romance Writer) writes the fantastic paranormal Immortal series. If you love sex, dark alpha males, read JK's books. There are currently four books in the series: My Immortal, Dark Immortal, Immortal Kiss and Forever Immortal. Oh, and she's also written Trouble with Destiny, which will soon be re-released by Samhain Publishing.

It's tough to interview someone you know, but I gave it a shot:

So, JK, what was the very first story you wrote about?

If I remember correctly, one of the very first stories I ever wrote was a gory thing called Martians in the Kitchen. It was about one of those old-school radio serial radio shows a la War of the Worlds. The heroine was a young high school girl whose boyfriend had been killed in a car accident. She discovers that his ghost hasn’t quite made it to the hereafter, but now resides in her radio and is trying to kill her and her new boyfriend. I read way too many horror novels when I was young and impressionable.

Of the books you've written, do you have a favourite - one that if a fan could read none of your others, you wish they'd read? (Yes, I could hear her groan on this one - no author wants to have to pick one of their 'babies' over another, but I asked anyway.)

I do love all of my books. I have a special attachment to My Immortal, for obvious reasons—it was my first book. And I love Immortal Kiss because I completely fell for Baron’s high energy, boyish charm. Alric from Dark Immortal is my tortured soul, and his and Diana’s story touched me very deeply. While Gideon and Lyssa from Forever Immortal are so vibrant and feisty, the two of them burn up the pages. Then of course, there’s The Trouble With Destiny—my foray into writing in first person. Sarah’s sense of humour is warped, to say the least, but I loved writing her.

So, um, what was the question again? A favourite?

Just read them all.

What have you got planned for when the Immortal series is finished?

Well, there are currently two more books planned for the Immortal series, but they will be taking a backseat for just a little while because I’m currently writing the first book of a new vampire series. This first book will be about a vampire Enforcer and the strong woman he doesn’t want at his side—even though he needs her. Justice made an appearance in Immortal Kiss and I received such an outcry for his story that I knew I couldn’t leave it for too long. Good thing he decided to play along—mostly.

Do you play music when you're writing?

I don’t play music while writing, but I do listen to music constantly while I’m plotting. I need the music when I’m building the story in my head. It creates mood and gives me energy. Most of the time, I like hard rock and rap, but for this last book I found myself really getting into the Romeo/Juliet soundtrack (Dicaprio/Danes version). Now I’m listening to a lot of Kanye West, David Banner, Common, Theory of a Deadman, and Lupe Fiasco.

***

Here's where I got bored (not with JK, but with my own questions) and I figured you guys would be too because you've probably seen a ton of these type of interviews before, as has JK. So I decided to change this up. I asked JK to finish the following sentences:

I'm happiest when ... I have a weekend with my family, and no other social obligations to attend to

My favourite place to vacation is .... A quiet cottage in Algonquin Park on the lake with the loons cooing in the late afternoon as the sun sets over the water, and my husband and son sitting on the dock laughing, fishing rods in their hands because .... Honestly, who wouldn’t love that?

I love listening to .... My son, who talks incessantly just like his father. Usually about nothing, but I can’t get enough of it.

Hmm, I'm sensing a theme here.

My favourite way of kicking back and indulging myself is .... To turn off the television, the computer, take the phone off the hook and read a great book from start to finish right through without stopping.

Well, duh, Leah. Ask an author that question, what did you expect the answer to be?

Okay, I admit it. I suck at interviewing.

So here's your chance to play interviewer to win.

Ask JK a question you're dying to know the answer to. Be creative. (In other words, no "where do you get your inspiration?" And no, you can't ask her what color her nipples are, or if the collar matches the cuff, Inez has already asked that.) If you ask a question, you are entered to win an e-copy of your choice of JK's books. (But you have to ask an original question to qualify. No asking the same question someone's already posted.)

Ready? Set? Go!

What's the scariest book you've ever read?

J.K. Coi said...

Hey Chris, one of the scariest books I ever read was IT by S.King. Of course, I read it when I was maybe 13, so it made an impression on a young mind :)

*shiver* hate those damn clowns.

What would be the hardest genre for you to write? As in 'I'm neva gonna attempt to write a...'

:)

J.K. Coi said...

Hiya Viv!! Isn't it pretty early for you?

I think the "one I'm never gonna even attempt" is probably historical. Yep. Love 'em. Can't write that voice to save my life.

although...

I say that, but I've been liking the idea of trying to do a victorian era steampunk. What do you think?

Nancy G said...

If you could sit down and chat with any one person, real or fictional, who would it be and why? Don't enter me in the contest as I already have all four Immortals and Destiny too.

J.K. Coi said...

Hi Nancy!
That’s a tough one because there are so many people.
But I would love to talk to Cleopatra. I’d ask her the secret of enchanting powerful men, and then warn her against playing with snakes.

I’d love to talk to Queen Elizabeth and ask her how she found the strength.

And I’d ask Picasso what the hell he was thinking, then I’d tap him on the shoulder and say “just kidding, it’s great!” :)

If you could bring your characters to the big or small screen who would you chose as your leads?

What is your favorite food to eat while working on a new book?

J.K. Coi said...

Hiya HV! Eat? I don't eat. Not when I'm working on a book. I also don't sleep. Don't go out. Don't answer the phone...

It's a chore that I have to go to the day job :)

Viv Arend said...

Sleep is for wimps.

A steampunk. God, have I told you lately I love you?

J.K. Coi said...

Maybe not in the last week or so. I think you’re due.

LadyVampire2u said...

What is something unusual that you do or have done that people normally don't know or would be surprised to know about you?
Just meaning a surprising piece of info, like maybe you'll confess to secretly being an avid ghost hunter or you once took sky diving lessons.

J.K. Coi said...

Well, I have taken skydiving lessons, but that’s not a big secret. One thing you might be surprised to know is that I have a serious serious fangirl crush on the Rock. You know—Dwayne Johnson.

And it’s very metaphysical—okay, it’s purely physical.

Hi JK,

Have you ever characterized your husband in any of your books, as say, hero or villain?

joyroett said...

Hey JK

What made you go with 1st person for the 4th immortal book?

J.K. Coi said...

Armenia: I haven’t used my husband as a character, not as a whole. But little bits of him are in all of my characters (he doesn’t like that I cut him all up like that :)

Hey there Joy! The fourth Immortal book is in third person (Forever Immortal), but Trouble With Destiny (which is a standalone) is in first. I decided to do it that way because of the type of story it is (more UF) and because I just wanted to give it a shot—I really enjoyed it too. Can’t wait to revisit those characters and that style of writing.

flchen1 said...

Hi, J.K.! You may not know this, but author Heidi Betts would probably call dibs on Mr. Johnson ;) I'll leave you two to duke it out, but excellent taste :D

Hmm... what's the most interesting/unusual thing you've done for the sake of research? (Any new foods? travel? interviews with fascinating people?) And a more traditional question--did you always know you wanted to be a writer? What were you "most likely to..." in high school?

Leah Braemel said...

JK (and flchen1) You can drool all you want, but if he is ever in Toronto, he's mine! I even posted pictures of him a while back since I see him as my "Sam". As for Heidi? pfft. I can take her.

Hi JK, if we could ask your best friend, what's the funniest thing about you, what would they say?

What is your favorite color and does it come into play in your books and with your characters?

Hi,

If I came to your house and took a look in your cupboards, what would I find there that would surprise me?

And please write that Steampunk....there's not too much of that about right now and I think it's the new BIG genre!!!

J.K. Coi said...

flchen and Leah: there’s no way. None. He’s mine. I called dibs back when he was still wrestling. Bring it on.
As for unusual research—does trying to think like the devil count as research? (truth is, that came pretty naturally for me and it probably doesn’t count. I’m eevil :)

And while I always did write, I didn’t think I would become a writer. It was more a hobby for the longest time. I’d always been more practical and set my sights on the legal profession.

J.K. Coi said...

Cathy: I’m hilarious. Really. I don’t understand how my friends can’t see it. Maybe because I’m always pulling pranks on them? He he he.

J.K. Coi said...

tigger: favourite colour? I usually gravitate towards red. I guess you can say it factors heavily in my books, what with all the blood :) eevil I tell you.

J.K. Coi said...

Hi Valerie, what’s up? My cupboards are full of necessary cooking items and actual food, which if you knew me, you’d be surprised at because I totally don’t cook. Lucky thing I have a hunky Italian god around the house who also does the cooking :)

mmmm Dwayne....my favourite movie is Walking Tall!
hmmm question...

If you could be a super hero, what would you want your superpowers to be?

Oh...and I found this site (I have a horrible imagination, so I rely on google!), it has some great questions on it!

Do you have any favorite vacation spots?

Leah Braemel said...

Hmm. Estella - I'd already asked that question:

My favourite place to vacation is .... A quiet cottage in Algonquin Park on the lake with the loons cooing in the late afternoon as the sun sets over the water, and my husband and son sitting on the dock laughing, fishing rods in their hands because .... Honestly, who wouldn’t love that?

Want to ask another one?

Susan Helene Gottfried said...

No need to enter me; I should be saying this every day, Leah. I have too much piled up waiting for me as it is. *sigh*

I'm dropping in to say hi and let you know I've FINALLY got this up at Win a Book. I'm slow today. But sun-kissed.

Thanks for the answer, JK! Evidently I can't count. hee hee

Hi JK,

Have you ever had something totally unexpected happen in your life and your first thought was to try to work it into the plot of your book? Were you successful?

Thanks,
Lesa

Marley Delarose, Author said...

My son does the same thing. He stays on the phone for an hour or more and most of the time doesn't even ask a question, but he does notice if I stop saying, that's cool, sweetheart, or really!

But I know the gist of his chatter. His new ideas for making money and how they are the most fantastic schemes out there.

Is it basically the same with your son? What does he talk about the most - friends, school, work, girls, how smart he is?

J.K. Coi said...

Heya Amy! Kiss the peanut for me! :)

Lesa, luckily the unexpected happens to me almost every day of the week, and I use it as fodder for my writing as much as I can (it usually gets twisted with a more paranormal bent to it though lol)

J.K. Coi said...

Hi Marley, thanks for coming by!

My son is the sweetest thing on earth--and a complete rascal I have to admit. He's only six, and I'm relieved that I'm not yet hearing about girls or money-making schemes. Right now his chatter is all about the frog he saw in the yard, or his friend Jaime's new Wii game, or how daddy swore when he hit his thumb with the hammer and didn't want him to tell me...

Great interview! Have you based a character from a family member or a friend?

if you were stranded on a deserted isle with the necessities covered what three things couldn't you do without.
And if you could be any vegatable what and why.

J.K. Coi said...

RKC: Kimber Chin and Leah were my frist collaboration and it was such an awesome experience, I couldn't have asked for better authors to work with. I hope you've had a chance to read the short story we put together.

If I could write with anyone else in the world, it would be Emily Bronte. Such beautiful, haunting imagery and writing.

J.K. Coi said...

Pam: If I were stranded on an island, I'd need my MP3 player. Sorry, materialistic like that. I'd also want hubby to keep me warm--he's also a great fisherman, so that would help a lot.

And I just can't see any reason why I'd want to be a vegetable of any kind, unless maybe it's a super hot red pepper so no one would ever cut me up and put me in stir fry.

Caffey said...

Hi JK!
If you could meet three famous people or authors from the past that influenced you as an author, who would they be and what would you always love to ask them!?

Thanks
PS I'm not an author but I'd so love to meet Jane Austen, and 100's of questions for her about Darcy, LOL

J.K. Coi said...

Caffey, hi!
People who have influenced me as an author? Shakespeare (of course), Milton, Bronte, Marlowe, the list goes on. I love the classics--and I'd skip Austen if I could meet Darcy himself :)

flchen1 said...

LOL, J.K.! Eeeevil, huh? ;) I'm still staying out of the dibs question--you go!

And I have to chime in and say that I'm another mom who loves eavesdropping on the kids--their conversations are just hilarious! Mine aren't quite old enough yet where their topics are giving me fits or heart attacks yet; I'm sure the day will come when I'm very sorry I was listening in! For now, I'm going to enjoy their openness :)

Oh, and one more random question, if that's OK--what would you do with an extra couple million dollars? (Say, it magically appeared, courtesy a leprechaun with a rainbow or something similar...)

lindseye said...

Love the Q and A. I want to know do you have to name your characters or do they come with names already attached?

J.K. Coi said...

flchen: a couple million eh? I'm quitting the day job to write full time -- woo hoo! (oh wait, almost forgot that was only hypothetical) :)

lindseye: character names have come pretty easily to me (even though some of those names are a little unusual). There are a few times I've had to think of a name, but when it doesnt' come to me right away, I leave it blank for and something usually whispers in my ear in a day or two.

I just named my two new male characters Leo and Griffin--what do you think? I love 'em :)

Chris said...

Why would you want to write a Victorian Steampunk novel? I love Steampunk, it's a very intriguing genre, just wondering what might draw you to it.
