Immortalizing JK Coi

My regular followers are already familiar with JK Coi - she, Kimber Chin and I got together back in June and wrote a cross-genre short story. JK (a fellow Toronto Romance Writer) writes the fantastic paranormal Immortal series. If you love sex, dark alpha males, read JK's books. There are currently four books in the series: My Immortal, Dark Immortal, Immortal Kiss and Forever Immortal. Oh, and she's also written Trouble with Destiny, which will soon be re-released by Samhain Publishing.

It's tough to interview someone you know, but I gave it a shot:


So, JK, what was the very first story you wrote about?

If I remember correctly, one of the very first stories I ever wrote was a gory thing called Martians in the Kitchen. It was about one of those old-school radio serial radio shows a la War of the Worlds. The heroine was a young high school girl whose boyfriend had been killed in a car accident. She discovers that his ghost hasn’t quite made it to the hereafter, but now resides in her radio and is trying to kill her and her new boyfriend. I read way too many horror novels when I was young and impressionable.

Of the books you've written, do you have a favourite - one that if a fan could read none of your others, you wish they'd read? (Yes, I could hear her groan on this one - no author wants to have to pick one of their 'babies' over another, but I asked anyway.)

I do love all of my books. I have a special attachment to My Immortal, for obvious reasons—it was my first book. And I love Immortal Kiss because I completely fell for Baron’s high energy, boyish charm. Alric from Dark Immortal is my tortured soul, and his and Diana’s story touched me very deeply. While Gideon and Lyssa from Forever Immortal are so vibrant and feisty, the two of them burn up the pages. Then of course, there’s The Trouble With Destiny—my foray into writing in first person. Sarah’s sense of humour is warped, to say the least, but I loved writing her.

So, um, what was the question again? A favourite?

What have you got planned for when the Immortal series is finished?

Well, there are currently two more books planned for the Immortal series, but they will be taking a backseat for just a little while because I’m currently writing the first book of a new vampire series. This first book will be about a vampire Enforcer and the strong woman he doesn’t want at his side—even though he needs her. Justice made an appearance in Immortal Kiss and I received such an outcry for his story that I knew I couldn’t leave it for too long. Good thing he decided to play along—mostly.

Do you play music when you're writing?

I don’t play music while writing, but I do listen to music constantly while I’m plotting. I need the music when I’m building the story in my head. It creates mood and gives me energy. Most of the time, I like hard rock and rap, but for this last book I found myself really getting into the Romeo/Juliet soundtrack (Dicaprio/Danes version). Now I’m listening to a lot of Kanye West, David Banner, Common, Theory of a Deadman, and Lupe Fiasco.

Here's where I got bored (not with JK, but with my own questions) and I figured you guys would be too because you've probably seen a ton of these type of interviews before, as has JK. So I decided to change this up. I asked JK to finish the following sentences:

I'm happiest when ... I have a weekend with my family, and no other social obligations to attend to

My favourite place to vacation is .... A quiet cottage in Algonquin Park on the lake with the loons cooing in the late afternoon as the sun sets over the water, and my husband and son sitting on the dock laughing, fishing rods in their hands because .... Honestly, who wouldn’t love that?

I love listening to .... My son, who talks incessantly just like his father. Usually about nothing, but I can’t get enough of it.

Hmm, I'm sensing a theme here.

My favourite way of kicking back and indulging myself is .... To turn off the television, the computer, take the phone off the hook and read a great book from start to finish right through without stopping.
