A couple weeks ago, while I was buying some books at my local Chapters bookstore, the store clerk looked at my books, and told me about a Paranormal Romance group that meets there every month. Last night was the night, so I headed down there for a look-see. It was so much fun. A dozen ladies who discussed what they liked about and didn't like about the books they'd chosen to read last month - Charlaine Harris' 4th book in the Sookie Stackhouse series, a Lora Leigh (that wasn't Paranormal), and a couple others (I really apologize but there was so much talk I've forgotten.) This wasn't one of those stuffy tear-the-book-apart and analyze-it-death discussions, it was sitting down in the coffee shop and saying straight out what you liked about it or didn't like about it in plain talk with lots of laughter.
When they were looking for suggestions for books to read for next month's meeting, another lady spoke up before I could and suggested Shelly Laurenston's Pack Challenge - a Samhain book. Is it lame that I squee that my Canadian bookstore carries Samhain books? And that other readers are recommending them without me needing to? I can't help it. I did a quiet little squee.
For a blue collar town, I love that the only bookstore in the area is so romance-friendly. Terri said that they're planning on enlarging the romance section. Considering that genre's sales are climbing while others are plunging, it makes sense. And go them for encouraging a romance group to meet. (They certain made their money out of me last night - me who cannot go to a bookstore without coming home without new books in hand. (4 so far)
